Abstract |
The toxicity of the insecticides Sevin, methoxychlor, and malathion and of the herbicides Treflan and 2,4-D to the bay mussel (Mytilus edulis) was investigated. Toxic effects were measured in terms of survival of and byssus-thread attachment by adults, embryo shell development, and larval growth and metamorphosis. The results indicated that growth was the most sensitive measure of toxicity. All the pesticides produced statistically significant (p = 0.05) reductions in larval shell length after 10 to 20 days of exposure. Relative to potency, methoxychlor was the most toxic, and 2,4-D was the least toxic. The effects on embryo development of delaying the time of fertilization and of using seawater larval culture media of various ages also were studied, and substrate preference by metamorphosing larvae was investigated. |
