Abstract |
More than 1000 attended the International Conference on Pollution Prevention: Clean Technologies and Clean Products, held in Washington, DC, June 10-13, 1990. With support from the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, and the International Association for Clean Technology, this conference was sponsored by the EPA's Risk Reduction Engineering Laboratory in Cincinnati, Ohio. Featuring 52 sessions and more than 250 speakers, the conference explored the innovative technologies and socio-economic issues arising in the field of pollution prevention. With an agenda of presenting successful examples of clean technologies and clean products, the conference became the perfect opportunity to examine how a large meeting might itself be run as a clean product. Several pollution prevention options were identified and implemented, with varying degrees of success. The report examines the development of the conference as a clean product, the options identified, how they were implemented and the level of success achieved. It demonstrates the common sense value of adopting clean practices at every level of their professional activities and is being used by RREL managers as a guide to minimizing the generation of wastes at organized meetings, workshops, and conferences. |
