Abstract | The purpose of this study was to evaluate one of the promising new methods for ammonia removal from domestic wastewaters. Ferrate(VI) not only could be used to oxidize the ammonia but could also oxidize organic compounds, serve as a bactericide, and could coagulate phosphates with the ferric hydroxide formed during reaction. The reaction of ferrate(VI) on ammonia was studied in an attempt to locate the best reaction conditions in terms of pH, temperature, and ferrate(VI) to ammonia ratio needed to produce the highest ammonia conversions to nitrogen possible without the aid of a catalyst. |
