Abstract
The manual provides guidance on how to conduct a sanitary survey of surface water and ground water under the direct influence (GWUDI) of surface water drinking water systems. Four principal stages of this process are discussed in detail: planning a sanitary survey, conducting the on-site survey, compiling a sanitary survey report and performing follow-up activities. The document also describes how to identify assessment criteria to be evaluated for sanitary risks, and significant deficiencies which may pose an immediate health risk. Appendix A contains sample sanitary checklists used by States and EPA regional offices.
