The document is the product of intensive research to improve and expand the understanding of results obtained from the Algal Assay Procedure: Bottle Test (USEPA 1971) to enable investigators to define the stimulatory and/or inhibitory interaction(s) of municipal, industrial and agricultural wastes upon algal productivity in natural waters. This research was designed to determine: (1) The impact of nutrients and/or changes in their loading upon algal productivity; (2) whether the growth response of Selenastrum capricornutum reflects the response of indigenous species; (3) the feasibility of the assay test protocol to evaluate heavy metals; (4) the capability of the assay to define the effect(s) of complex wastes; and (5) if the assay information can be applied to define and assist in the management of real-world situation. As a result of these research efforts the Selenastrum capricornutum Printz Algal Assay Bottle Test: Experimental Design, Application and Data Interpretation Guide is offered now for wider application in both eutrophication and toxicity problem areas.
