Abstract
The report reviews the methods used to remove sources of sulfur, nitrogen, and trace element pollutants from coal, coal liquids, petroleum, tar sand oils, and shale oils. The evaluation is restricted to systems that remove contaminants before combustion. The survey identifies contaminant removal methods which were used successfully in the past, are used now, or which, although previously unsuccessful, might be used successfully today. The evaluations generally indicate that no single method is effective for removing all of the contaminants from the fuels under consideration, yet permitting the fuel to be recovered unaltered in form and quality. Some methods release the contaminants but the actual removal requires additional processing. Combined processes might offer advantages to overcome the limitations of single-function processes.
