Abstract
The chapter deals with sulfur dioxide and sulfate deposition from the atmosphere to the ground. Sulfur dioxide may be transformed to sulfate compounds in the atmosphere and in vegetation, soil, and water. The extent to which sulfur deposition changes the pH of the soil and water is not addressed here. Rather, sulfur loading is taken as an indicator of potential for acidification. Nitrogen compounds may also produce acidification; however, less is known about these processes and they are not considered here.
