Abstract | This report describes the synoptic method and the progress to date towards an empirical strategy in development by the Wetlands Research Program (WRP). Both serve as screening tools for prioritizing watersheds, or other landscape units, during environmental management efforts. The synoptic method provides a qualitative assessment that can consider subjective measures, such as social values. The empirical strategy aims to provide a more rigorous, quantitative assessment, based on established ecological relations. This report discusses the strengths and limitations of each assessment, the ways each complements the other, and their appropriate applications. The goal is to provide resource managers with methods that can be used alone or in conjunction with one another to enhance their best professional judgement. |
