To provide a realistic assessment of current and potential pollution problems and a rational basis for ground water quality protection, it is necessary to collect representative samples from this remote and relatively inaccessible environment. This article presents some procedures currently utilized to sample ground water and subsurface earth materials for microbial and inorganic and organic chemical parameters. In selecting a sampling procedure, a number of considerations are described based on the objectives of the sampling program, characteristics of pollutants, nature of pollution source, and hydrogeology of the area. Various techniques for constructing sampling wells and for withdrawing samples are also noted. For situations where samples of subsurface earth materials are required to adequately assess ground-water quality threats, procedures are described for collecting, handling, and processing core samples.
