Abstract | In this report, the findings of the Pollution Prevention Opportunity Assessment of the United States Postal Service, Materials Distribution Center, Central Repair Facility, and Label Printing Center located in Topeka, Kansas are described. The report describes the mission of each of the functional areas of the MDC including operations performed, processes and materials employed and the wastes and emissions generated. Recommendations are made concerning the procurement of office supplies, maintenance supplies and hazardous materials; management of hazardous materials; purchase of chemicals on EPA's 33/50 list; improvement of source separation and recycling of paper and paper products, metals and plastics; management of unwanted equipment; and other recommendations that can lead to the elimination, reduction, or improved management of the facility's solid and hazardous waste streams and emissions to air and water. |
