| Abstract |
Monthly effluent samples collected for a period of one year were analyzed for nitrogen and phosphorus content. Over 500 municipal sewage treatment plants in the eastern United States were involved in the program. Although there was wide variation between plants, median total phosphorus and total nitrogen concentrations were 5.89 mg/l and 15.00 mg/l respectively. The median annual per capita load discharged was 2.2 lbs phosphorus/capita/year and 6.0 lbs nitrogen/capita/year. |
