Abstract
In order to prevent the capture of the Mississippi River by the Atchafalaya River, two control structures were built on the west bank of the Mississippi River approximately 10 miles upstream from Old River. A side draft developed at the entrance to the low sill control structure tending to pull tows toward the structure. A model of the reach was constructed at Waterways Experiment Station to develop a plan to improve the situation. The plan for improving the condition was to develop the pool along the left bank with the crossing near the entrance to the structure stabilizing the channel into its former alignment. The results of the model tests were that the dike field filled and the bar on the opposite side receded. By keeping the dike profiles low and sloping, scour around the dikes may be held to a minimum. This type of design allows the river to adjust slowly to a dike field rather than fight it. (Knapp-USGS)
