Abstract |
The report describes an experimental program which studies waste rubber and waste tire disposal problems. The program served to (1) demonstrate the technical feasibility of hydrogenation processing of waste, ground tire feeds; (2) evaluate the worth of liquid and solid products produced; and (3) develop a preliminary model of a commercial flow sheet. The work demonstrated that ground-up tires can be converted into naphtha, low sulfur fuel oil, and reusable carbon black by reaction in a hydrogenation system at elevated temperature and pressure. Data obtained in catalytic and non-catalytic reaction systems were compared. A preliminary design of a commercial plant that could convert 1,000 tons per day of ground up rubber was prepared and its costs were estimated. (Modified author abstract) |
