Abstract |
The report addresses the rationale, considerations, and limitations of acute toxicity testing. General procedures are described for acute tests including lethality studies in oral, dermal, and inhalation toxicity, and irritation studies in dermal and eye toxicity, phototoxicity and skin sensitization. Recommendations are given for the acute toxicity tests which may be used to evaluate the risks associated with the manufacture and processing of chemical substances. Suggested minimum protocols are offered including the choice of test animals, dosage levels, laboratory practices, animal diets, and necropsy requirements. A method is suggested for interpreting the results of these tests and extrapolating to some guidelines for a safety factor in human exposure. |
