Abstract | Virginia's major estuarine systems, the James, York, and Rappahannock Rivers, are tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay system. These three rivers discharge into the lower third of the Bay and contribute approximately 22% of the freshwater to the primary estuary. The study was designed to compare the biological, chemical, and physical characteristics of these three coastal plain estuaries which differ in level of nutrient enrichment in the freshwater tidal reaches. |
