Abstract
The report sets out risk management recommendations for contamination with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2378-TCDD) and other polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (CDDS) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (CDFs) in and around Midland, Michigan. Included are: (1) a summary of the results of environmental studies undertaken by the U.S. EPA, the State of Michigan, and the Dow Chemical Company, including monitoring of air, soil, surface water, waste water, fish tissue, and garden vegetables for CDDs/CDFs; (2) a summary of possible health risks to Midland area residents resulting from exposures to CDDs/CDFs; (3) actions for minimizing emissions and discharges to the environment from Dow Chemical; (4) recommendations for residents of the Midland area on how to minimize exposures to CDDs/CDFs, and thus the possible health risks associated with these exposures; and (5) additional monitoring programs to delineate long-term trends in emissions and discharges of CDDs/CDFs, and to document changes in environmental contamination for the more significant human exposure routes. A summary of public comments on the Risk Assessment and on the Risk Management Recommendations is presented in an appendix.
