Abstract
This document focuses on the role of sediment and sorption processes in bioavailability of environmental contaminants. A conceptual framework is presented for evaluating the thermodynamic potential for organic pollutant uptake by aquatic organisms, with special emphasis on sediment sources. Also, the role of desorption kinetics (or sorbed chemical accessibility) is discussed for cases where significant chemical depletion of the sediment in the exposure environment may result from chemical uptake by the organism.
