The research concerns sulfur control by means of coal gasification. Previous work has shown that desulfurization reactions on coal during pyrolysis and gasification are inefficient under equilibrium conditions. The experiments included measurements on the desulfurization kinetics (non-isothermal) for ten bituminous coals. An extensive series of measurements were conducted on the kinetics of H2S reactions with coal char and with the principal reactive constituents of char including carbon, iron, and calcium oxide. The kinetics of calcination for several dolomites and limestones were investigated. Experiments were also conducted on the pyrolysis of coal mixed with calcium oxide and on the gasification of coal with steam and oxygen both in the presence and absence of calcium oxide.
