Abstract |
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has instituted a research and regulatory development program for establishing the best demonstrated and available technology (DBAT) for RCRA and Superfund wastes in response to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Hazardous and Solid Waste Amendments of 1984, which prohibit the continued land disposal of untreated hazardous wastes. Under Phase I of EPA's BDAT research program, a representative surrogate soil containing a wide range of chemical contaminants typically found at Superfund sites was prepared for use in bench-scale evaluations of the treatment technologies. In Phase II, actual Superfund site contaminated soil and debris were used to evaluate the same technologies. The paper discusses the development of the surrogate soil and the results of the Phase I study. |
