Objective:
The primary objectives of this research are to:
· Characterize the distribution of exposures to selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for a subset of the U.S. population, by obtaining 48-hour measurements of personal exposure to selected VOCs for 1,000 individuals between the ages of 20 and 59 years, selected as a representative subsample of this subgroup of the U.S. population. Information on levels of exposure to these compounds is essential to determine the need for regulatory mechanisms to reduce the levels of air toxics to which the general population is exposed.
· Examine the relationship between personal exposure to selected VOCs and demographic, economic, and behavioral characteristics obtained from interview data; and to examine the variation in personal exposures of study subjects to VOCs in relation to demographic, economic, and behavioral factors.
Progress Summary:
This project is a component of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for the year 2001. The project was initiated by the center in June 1998, under a previous EPA grant (Grant No. R824834C004). It was continued under this follow-on grant and is expected to be completed by December 2002. The VOC Project was conducted at 15 U.S. sites, for periods of 4 to 7 weeks, and more than 400 subjects were recruited into the project. Exposures of subjects to VOCs were assessed through the use of personal exposure dosimeters (Model 3520 Organic Vapor Monitors, manufactured by 3M Company) that were worn by subjects for periods of 48-72 hours. The VOCs monitored in the project include: benzene; 1,3-butadiene; carbon tetrachloride; chloroform; 1,4-dichloroethylene; ethylbenzene; methylene chloride; styrene; tetrachloroethylene; toluene; trichloroethylene; o-xylene; m/p-xylene; methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE); and chloroprene.
The dosimeters, or exposure badges, were forwarded for analysis to the EOHSI Laboratory in shipments within a few days after exposure. Through a questionnaire, subjects also provided information about time spent in various activities and locations while wearing their badges. Many subjects provided blood samples at the end of the exposure period, to be analyzed for a related project dealing with blood levels of VOCs.
Recruitment for the NHANES Project was very good during 2001, with response rates in the 80-90 percent range during the year, which is higher than previous years. These levels of response were achieved because NHANES staff developed wider community outreach, including newspaper reports about the survey, local TV/radio announcements, and community endorsements.
Future Activities:
A public data release is expected in 2002. When these data are made available, the NUATRC will sponsor research utilizing the NHANES VOC Project data to investigate such areas as potential associations between personal exposures to certain VOCs and lifestyles of individual NHANES subjects, and source apportionment for some VOCs to which the NHANES subjects were exposed in their communities.
