Objective:
This objective of this study is to measure volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations in residents of a South Baltimore community, whom are concerned about their proximity to industrial emissions. The project will provide VOC exposure information to the concerned community, apportion indoor and outdoor sources, and evaluate benzene as an exposure biomarker.
Approach:
This project was initiated in August 1999, under a previous EPA grant (Grant No. R824834C003), and will continue under this follow-on grant. Using organic vapor monitor VOC badges, 40 adults and 15 children will be monitored for indoor, outdoor, and personal concentration of VOCs such as benzene, 1,3-butadiene, and carbon tetrachloride. A control group in a reference community will consist of 15 adult-child combinations. In addition, 30 residents of the exposed community and 15 residents of the comparison unexposed community will be monitored for benzene exposure.
Expected Results:
We expect our results to show that area industrial emissions result in elevated levels of VOC exposure to local residents. VOC source apportionment will be sought based on the measurements of specific chemicals.
