Description:
The objective of this project is to enhance the competitiveness of environmental research in Wyoming through aiding young researchers and enhancing recruitment of students to environmentally-related careers.
Approach:
The Wyoming EPA/EPSCoR Project will serve to facilitate/accelerate the progress of at least two young researchers toward achievement of nationally competitive status. Further, the research will provide opportunities for enhancing environmentally-related human resources through the involvement of high school, undergraduate and graduate students. Synergistically with the newly created Institute for Environment and Natural Resources, the conduct of the SEER project entitled "Influence of bio-pollution on ecosystem processes: the impact introduced lake trout on streams and terrestrial predators in Yellowstone National Park" will play an important role in the sharpening of communication with State and Federal agencies concerned with the environmental sciences and natural resource management. The SEER project is consistent with recently articulated research and infrastructure goals of the University of Wyoming and the overall strategic goals of the state's EPSCoR program. Site visits by experts from some of the country's top research universities, and invited campus presentations by nationally recognized authorities will reduce the sometimes limiting isolation experienced by University researchers.
Expected Results:
The project will support the conduct of research important to the management of expansive environmental resources and the development of new technologies both important to the state's economy and, concomitantly, act to amplify the State's research infrastructure.
