Research Category: Human Health

Objective:

This is the a 7 yearEPA Cooperative Agreement titled“Human Health Effects of Environmental Pollutants” awarded to the UNC Center for Environmental Medicine, Asthma and Lung Biology. The period of performance is April 1, 2015 through March 31, 2022 with a requirement for annualprogress reports. This report is organized as outlined in the Terms and Conditions of CR 83578501.

The primary mission of the UNC Center for Environmental Medicine, Asthma and Lung Biology (CEMALB) is to improve understanding of the impact of environmental factors on human health, with the goal of generating knowledge to inform public policy decisions regarding pollution control and develop personal mitigation strategies for susceptible populations. We have enjoyed a long-time collaborative relationship with the Environmental Public Health Division of the US EPA. This collaborative research program has traditionally emphasized translational studies of the effect of pollutants on lung disease and biology, specifically pollutant effects in asthma, allergy and respiratory host defense. Induction of systemic responses by pollutants is also of key importance, as this impacts cardiovascular health. Studies of all these areas have led to the appreciation that oxidative stress, inflammation, and innate immunity are key mechanisms that mediate response to pollution.

To respond to the EPA Funding Opportunity "Human Health Effects of Environmental Pollutants", the UNC CEMALB has developed this cooperative agreement proposal entitled "Translational Research Center for Environmental Medicine and Toxicology" (TRCEMT). The proposed TRCEMT is organized to be responsive to the research areas outlined in the funding announcement, which include a) Multi-pollutant Interactions, b) Health Effects Associated with Inhaled Particulate Pollutants Derived from Specific Sources, c) Susceptibility to Air Pollutants, d) Social Determinants of Health, e) Intervention Studies, and f) Biological Mechanisms.

The TRCEMT is composed of three projects, two support cores and an administrative core. Project 1 is led by David Peden and is entitled "Biological Determinants of Inflammatory Response to Pollutants". Project 2 is led by Ilona Jaspers and is entitled "Health Effects Associated with Inhaled Particulate Pollutants Derived from Specific Sources". Project 3 is led by Michelle Hernandez and is entitled "IL-1beta and Anakinra in Modulation of 03-induced inflammation in Asthma". These three projects (to be funded from base allocations) respond to the areas "Health Effects Associated with Inhaled Particulate Pollutants Derived from Specific Sources", "Susceptibility to Air Pollutants", and "Intervention Studies". Additionally, the funding announcement outlines the potential for additional program specific supplements to base funding to targeted program needs. We have outlined potential above base pilot projects which may be funded from such sources. These pilot projects would address Multi-pollutant Interactions, Social Determinants of Health, and Intervention Studies. Biological Mechanisms are addressed in each of the primary and pilot projects.
