Objective:

The objectives of this project are to determine the wavelength-resolved single scattering albedo (SSA), absorption, and extinction along with the chemical and physical properties of aerosol emissions from biomass burning (wildfires) in the Western United States. These data enable us to determine the contribution of black versus brown carbon to observed aerosol absorption and quantify the enhancement of black carbon absorption caused by organic coatings.  We utilize these new in-situ observations to update the refractive indices of organic and black carbon aerosol from biomass burning in the NCAR Community Atmosphere Model (CAM5) and assess the regional and global climate impacts of improved optical properties under a range of future biomass burning scenarios.

Progress Summary:

The major accomplishments during this reporting period are:

1.) Participation and successful data collection during the Moonlight Chamber Experiments at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Data have been uploaded to a central server available to all participants in the chamber experiments.

2.) Final publication of Foster et al. (2019) describing a new particle-based calibration technique for photoacoustic absorption spectrometers

3.) Completion of a final draft of a manuscript comparing laboratory to ambient observations of biomass burning optical properties to be submitted by June, 2020.

4.) Completion of a final draft of a manuscript describing near universal underestimation of single scattering albedo in global climate models compared to global observations.

5.) Near completion of a final draft of a manuscript demonstrating the ability to quantify absorption from specific compounds observed in the chamber experiments in field data.

Future Activities:

The unpublished manuscripts described in the Outputs/Outcomes will be completed and published and analysis of the 2018 deployment data will continue. Principal investigator Shane Murphy will prepare to participate in the final project meeting for the grant either in person or remotely during a seminar series.
