Objective:
The proposal focuses on one of the key research questions identified in the RFA: “How might models that project changes in land-use and activity locations be improved to better reflect and integrate lifestyle, economic production, and public policy factors that drive vehicle miles traveled?” Our proposal addresses this research topic by building on UrbanSim, an Open Source urban simulation system developed in the last several years at the Center for Urban Simulation and Policy Analysis (CUSPA) at the University of Washington. We propose to integrate into this platform an activity-based travel model component and a network assignment component, to support coordinated modeling and planning of land use, transportation and air quality.
Progress Summary:
The following are highlights of the period from September 16, 2005 to September 15, 2006:
- Completed research on the interdependence of residence and workplace choice, including the development of a new methodology to address econometric problems of endogeneity. This work was presented at the International Association of Travel Behavior Research in Kyoto, Japan, in August 2006.
- Completed research on the interdependence of residence location and mode choice, with implications for endogeneity in residential sorting. Extended methodology for modeling interdependent choices.
- Completed research on the influence of multi-modal accessibility on residence location, incorporating improvements in the treatment of individual accessibility in households with different numbers of households. This work was also presented at the IATBR Conference in Kyoto, Japan in August, 2006.
- Developed an algorithm to correct for bias in residential location choice models due to endogenous capacity constraints in the housing market (more people wanting to locate in desirable neighborhoods than housing supply permits). This work was cooperative with researchers in France and tested in the Paris housing market.
- Operationalized an integrated land use–transportation model system in the Puget Sound region, using UrbanSim and the four-step travel model used by the Puget Sound Regional Council. Began conducting sensitivity analysis on this integrated model system.
- Began an application of UrbanSim in San Francisco, to test the integration of UrbanSim with the activity-based travel model system used by the San Francisco County Transportation Authority. This is the first parcel level land use model application, and the first to integrate with an operational activity-based travel model
- Coordinated the EPA research program to take advantage of software developments in the Open Platform for Urban Simulation (OPUS), released initially in July, 2006 by the Center for Urban Simulation and Policy Analysis at the University of Washington.
