Title: Mickey Leland National Urban Air Toxics Research Center (NUATRC)
Investigators: Beskid, Craig
Institution: The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston
EPA Project Officer: Chung, Serena
Project Period: January 1, 1991 through January 1, 2003
Project Amount: $5,511,200
RFA: Mickey Leland National Urban Air Toxics Research Center (NUATRC) (1997) RFA Text | Recipients Lists
Research Category: Congressionally Mandated Center , Urban Air Toxics , Targeted Research
Objective:
NUATRC's mission is to develop an environmental health research program on the public health risks posed by air toxics in urban atmospheres. The center's research program is focused on:
- Personal exposure determinations (measurements of actual exposures to air
toxics by people living in urban environments).
- Use of biomarkers (health effect assessment in susceptible populations).
- Health effects research (clinical, toxicological and epidemiological
studies). Initial research projects involved an assessment of research gaps
related to the chemical and physical processes of asthma and the effect of air
toxics on same.
- Improved specificity and sensitivity of biomarkers; and the use of passive monitors for short term personal exposures to selected air toxics.
