Objective:
The goal of this study is to develop a comprehensive set of data related to the fate, transport, and bioaccumulation of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and resultant human exposure. This study seeks to fill the data gaps on the fundamental environmental behavior of overlooked PFASs, the uptake into local food sources in impacted communities, and the relevance of that uptake for human exposure to PFASs.
Progress Summary:
As of the three-year mark, we have held one in-person team meeting with all collaborating institutions and three virtual introductory Advisory Board meetings. Thus far in the research we have successfully achieved the following:
- Completed range-finding, kinetic, and preliminary studies for PFAS isotherm experiments
- Completed method development for the determination of perfluoroalkyl ether acids (PFEAs) and other PFASs in plant products and analyzed field samples collected in North Carolina
- Finished PFAS plant uptake greenhouse experiments and completed preliminary extraction and analysis.
- Completed method development for the detection and quantification of PFASs in honey, meat and egg samples and analyzed samples collected in Michigan.
- Finished collection of blood, wristband, and samples from participants in Michigan
- Ran additional statistical analyses of Colorado and North Carolina PFAS serum datasets
Future Activities:
- Complete analysis and submit results of sorption studies for publication
- Submit results of unsaturated transport experiments for publication
- Complete analysis of greenhouse experiments and submit for publication
- Submit results of TSCF experiments for publication
- Complete analysis of market basket samples and submit for publication
- Complete analysis of human biomonitoring samples and submit for publication
- Summarize and report-back results to participants and community members in Michigan
