Notice
As per the May 21, 2009, IRIS process, all comments received from federal agencies and White House offices on draft IRIS assessments will be made publicly available. Accordingly, interagency comments and the interagency science consultation draft of the cis- and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene IRIS assessment have been posted on this site.
On September 24, 2009, the Toxicological Review of cis- and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene and the charge to external peer reviewers were released for external peer review and public comment. The Toxicological Review and charge were reviewed internally by EPA and by other federal agencies and White House Offices before public release. In the new IRIS process, introduced by the EPA Administrator, all written comments on IRIS assessments submitted by other federal agencies and White House Offices will be made publicly available. Accordingly, interagency comments and the interagency science consultation drafts of the cis- and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene IRIS Toxicological Review and charge to external peer reviewers are posted on this site. Background
The draft Toxicological Review of cis- and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard identification and dose-response assessment pertaining to chronic exposure to cis- and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene. 1,2-Dichloroethylene is used as a solvent for waxes and resins, in rubber extraction, and as a coolant in refrigeration plants. The cis- and trans- isomers have slightly different physical, chemical, and biological properties. The trans-isomer is more widely used. 1,2-Dichloroethylene is frequently detected at federal and state hazardous waste sites across the country.
History/Chronology
| Sep 1988 | EPA released the assessment for trans-1,2-dichloroethylene (RfD only). |
| Dec 1990 | EPA released the assessment for cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (qualitative cancer assessment only). |
| Aug 2009 | EPA hosted an interagency science discussion on the review of the draft IRIS Summary and Toxicological Review of cis-and trans-1,2-Dichloroethylene . These comments are provided on this web site. |
| Sep 2009 | EPA released an External Review Draft of the assessment for public review and comment. |
Next Steps
Following external peer review of the Toxicological Review of 1,2-dichloroethylene, the assessment will be revised, to respond to external peer review and public comments, will undergo a final EPA internal review and a review by and science discussion with other federal agencies and White House offices, and will be posted to the IRIS database.
