Notice

EPA announces the release of the Toxicological Review of cis- and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene in a September 24, 2009 Federal Register Notice. This draft assessment is provided for public viewing and comment. Public comments received on the Toxicological Review within 60 days after the release of the FRN will be provided to the external peer reviewers for their consideration. Any comments not received within the requested time period will be considered by EPA in their revisions. This FR also announced a public listening session that was held on October 19, 2009. The external peer review meeting will be held on December 17, 2009 as announced in the November 10, 2009 Federal Register Notice announcement.

EPA is conducting a peer review of the scientific basis supporting the human health hazard and dose-response assessment of cis- and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene that will appear in the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) database.
Background
The draft Toxicological Review of cis- and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard and dose-response assessment pertaining to chronic exposure to cis- and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene. 1,2-Dichloroethylene is used as a solvent for waxes and resins, in rubber extraction, and as a coolant in refrigeration plants. The cis- and trans- isomers have slightly different physical, chemical, and biological properties. The trans-isomer is more widely used. 1,2-Dichloroethylene is frequently detected at federal and state hazardous waste sites across the country.

History/Chronology

Sep 1988EPA released the assessment for trans-1,2-dichloroethylene (RfD only).
Dec 1990EPA released the assessment for cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (qualitative cancer assessment only).
Aug 2009EPA hosted an interagency science discussion on the review of the draft IRIS Summary and Toxicological Review of cis-and trans-1,2-Dichloroethylene.
Sep 2009EPA released an external review draft of the assessment for public review and comment.
Nov 2009EPA announces the details of an external peer review workshop to be held on December 17, 2009 in a November 10, 2009 Federal Register Notice.

Next Steps

Following external peer review of the report, the final assessment will be posted to the IRIS database.
