Abstract |
Commercially available soil stabilizers, including chemical tackifiers, hydromulches and blanket (netting) products and combinations thereof, were tested in the Piedmont of South Carolina. The test site was designed to measure sediment yields to provide a quantitative assessment of treatment effectiveness. Following a severe rain, during the period before the establishment of a dense grass cover, it was found that the blanket products and straw mulches provided the soil with maximum protection from erosion. Some tackifiers were effective in stabilizing the fine fraction of the soil. Some hydromulches tended to be washed away and were not effective in inhibiting soil erosion. Each treatment contained a standard lime, seed and fertilizer mixture to test the ability of the technique to produce a dense vegetative cover. |
