Abstract |
Industrial smoke led to acute damage to vegetation, and SO2 was the most active substance in the smoke. Since that time, SO2 discharges have increased tremendously. The reason for this is first and foremost the great expansion of industry, the growth of densely populated areas and the use of oil for heating. In some places the SO2 concentration in the air has become so high that practically speaking all vegetation has died. This is partly the result of direct damage to leaves and partly the result of indirect damage due to unbalanced nutrient conditions in the soil. |
