Abstract A study using juvenile swine as test animals was performed to measure the gastrointestinal absorption of arsenic from four Barber Orchard soil samples. The soil samples are identified as MS-1, MS-4, MS-5 and MS-8. The soil samples were collected from the Barber Orchard site located near Waynesville, Haywood County, NC. The property was used as a commercial apple orchard from 1903 until the mid-1980s. In 1999, elevated concentrations of arsenic, lead and organic pesticides were found in the soil.
