Abstract |
Awareness of the acid rain problem has developed in many countries over more than a century. This brief article is an attempt to illuminate some of the questions, such as, why did it take so long for acid precipitation to be recognized as an important environmental problem. What factors of scientific awareness and public perception have influenced the course of research on acid precipitation. What role do humans play in the biogeochemistry and chemical climatology of the earth. The approach is to review various steps in the transformation of the concepts of acid precipitation from the domain of scientific curiosity to the domain of public concern and debate. |
