Abstract |
The review attempts to briefly illustrate what the 'state of the art' is in the recognition of the various sources and natural sinks of gaseous pollutants. The removal mechanisms include absorption by vegetation, soil, rock and water bodies, precipitation scavenging, and chemical reactions within the atmosphere. The nature and magnitude of anthropogenic and natural emissions of the gases considered (H2S, SO2, N2O, NO, NO2, NH3, CO, O3, and hydrocarbons), along with their ambient background concentrations and information on their major sinks identified to date, are discussed. In the case of sulfurous and nitrogenous compounds, this information has been used to prepare total geochemical cycles. |
