Abstract |
The two to three square mile Southeast Rockford Groundwater Contamination site is a residential area with contaminated private wells in Winnebago County, Rockford, Illinois. The site is in a predominantly urban residential area that includes retail and commercial operations. Surrounding land use is industrial. During sampling from 1981 to 1984, the City of Rockford identified elevated VOC levels in ground water. The Record of Decision (ROD) addresses the elimination of risk to residents of the southeast Rockford area due to contaminated ground water. The selected remedial action for this interim remedy includes providing an alternate water supply by constructing and extending water mains, and installing connections and service to the city distribution system for affected residents; reactivating Municipal Well number 35 after constructing a granular activated carbon water treatment f acility at the well; and abandoning contaminated private wells. |
