Abstract |
The results of studies conducted to determine the metabolic fate of carbamate insecticides and its toxicological significance are presented. Methomyl metabolism in rats was investigated in detail as was Croneton in the rat, cow, pig and chicken. Carbaryl and carbofuran were administered to rats endotracheally either as aerosols or as components of tobacco smoke and their fate determined. Carbaryl and nitrosocarbaryl were among a series of pesticides assayed for mutagenic/carcinogenic activity using the Ames assay system. In addition, a study was conducted to determine if the in vitro metabolism of carbaryl under conditions of the Ames assay was representative of that which occurs in vivo. Respiratory 14C-carbon dioxide from carbonyl-labeled carbamates was evaluated as a technique for determining the effects of various factors on the metabolism of carbamate insecticides. Carbaryl and certain of its analogs were used in studies designed to define the role of glutathione conjugation in carbamate metabolism in rats. Conjugate and bound residues of carbaryl, carbofuran, Croneton and aldicarb formed by plants were administered orally to rats and their bioavailability ascertained. |
