Abstract |
Field evaluations of furrow irrigation practices at three Colorado locations were made during the 1979 irrigation season to develop a comprehensive data base. From these data, alternative field evaluation procedures were investigated as to the relationships between cost and accuracy. A simulation model based on traditional volume balance concepts was programmed and calibrated with the data base in order to evaluate if the relationships among furrow irrigation variables could be identified enroute to a general analysis of the effectiveness of improved practices on irrigation efficiency. Analysis of spatial and temporal field variabilities indicate large errors in estimating the irrigation efficiency of a furrow irrigation system unless field testing is comprehensive. Testing needs to include the first water application each season and at least three subsequent irrigations to yield representative results. Further, at least six individual furrows across the field should be studied. |
