Abstract The paper examines the influence of precipitation and temperature deviations on regional volume growth rates in even-aged, second-growth Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), some of which received N fertilizer treatments. Between 1969 and 1986, average volume growth rates in natural stands of Douglas-fir in Western Washington and Oregon were significantly enhanced by cool wet summers and mild winters. Results support the hypothesis that mild winters contribute to high productivity of conifers in the Pacific Northwest. Over the same period, there was no clear influence of precipitation and temperature deviations on growth response to N fertilizer.
