Abstract |
A two-year, large-scale pilot investigation was conducted at New York City's Port Richmond Water Pollution Control Plant to demonstrate the application of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection to secondary effluent and to determine the feasibility of applying UV to the disinfection of wastewater similar to combined sewer overflow (CSO). Three different systems were operated. The UV process was very effective in the disinfection of secondary effluent. Overall, the study demonstrated that log survival ratios of -3 to -4 could be achieved consistently at practical system loadings. A major element of the Port Richmond project was the development of a rationally based protocol for the design of the UV disinfection process. |
