Abstract |
The report presents a summary and analysis of current knowledge concerning health effects of alpha-emitting particles in the respiratory tract. The findings of the Committee were: (1) Lung cancer mortality in experimental animals can be adequately accounted for by averaging the absorbed alpha radiation dose over the entire lung; (2) Human data suggests the radiocarcinogenic sensitivity of the tracheobronchial region of the lung is greater than that of the alveolar region and the cancer risk for alpha irradiation of the alveolar region would not be underestimated by using the risk factors obtained for the tracheobronchial region; (3) Experimental evidence suggests the carcinogenic response is more a function of the amount of radioactivity in the lung than its distribution. |
