Abstract |
The report gives results of a paper study of the application potential of coalfired fluidized-bed boilers (FBB's) in the industrial use sector. It considers: the ability of coal-fired FBB's to meet the requirements of industrial users, including cost, reliability, maintainability, design, and performance requirements; the maximum, minimum, and most likely demand for such boilers in the industrial sector; the application effect of such boilers on the national fuel demand; the economic impact of industrial application of such boilers; and the environmental aspects of industrial FBB application. Study results suggest that industrial FBB's burning high-sulfur coal offer a cost advantage over equivalent conventional coal-fired boilers with flue gas desulfurization; with low-sulfur coals capable of meeting emission standards without SO2 controls, the costs of FBB's and conventional boilers are comparable. On this basis, the most likely projected degree of application of FBB's in the industrial sector in the year 2000 is 2.97 x 10 to the 15th power Btu/year. SO2, NOx, and particulate emissions from industrial coal-fired FBB's can be reduced to levels below those specified in current Federal emission standards for large coal-fired boilers. |
