Abstract |
The report gives results of field measurements of 18 coal stoker-fired boilers including spreader stokers, mass-fired overfeed stokers, and mass-fired underfeed stokers. The test variables included stoker design, heat release rate, excess air, coal analysis and sizing, overfire air, and flyash reinjection. Measurements included O2, CO2, CO, NO, NO2, SO2, SO3, gaseous hydrocarbons, uncontrolled and controlled particulate mass loading, particle size distribution of the flyash, combustible content of ash, sulfur retention in the ash, and boiler efficiency. Particulate loading is shown to be largely dependent on stoker type and degree of flyash reinjection. It increases with heat release rate, but can be controlled with proper use of overfire air in many cases. Nitric oxide increases with excess air and grate heat release rate. These relationships are defined in the report. Overfire air, as it exists in current boiler designs, does not affect NOx. The report also addresses other relationships between operating variables and measured emissions and efficiency. A separate data supplement is available. |
