Abstract The 300-square-mile Savannah River site (SRS) is a Department of Energy (DOE) facility located in Aiken, Barnwell, and Allendale Counties, South Carolina, 20 miles south of Aiken, South Carolina, and 25 miles southeast of Augusta, Georgia. From 1958 to 1985, SRS used a northwest portion of the site, termed the 'M-area', as a hazardous waste management facility (HWMF). The M-area HWMF or OU1 consisted of an unlined surface impoundment (settling basin), a process sewer line, an overflow drainage/seepage area, and an area known as Lost Lake, which represents a special ecological environment known as Carolina Bay. The interim ROD integrates previously completed RCRA closure activities that were required and approved by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. The primary contaminants of concern affecting soil, sludge, and surface water are VOCs, including TCE and PCE; metals, including lead; acids; and radioactive materials, including uranium.
