Abstract The 16.5-acre Hercules 009 Landfill site is in Brunswick, Glynn County, Georgia. Land use in the area is predominantly commercial and residential. Onsite features in the northern 7 acres of the site are a landfill area with 6 disposal cells containing approximately 33,000 cubic yards of 1 percent toxaphene sludge, a drainage ditch, and a drainage culvert. From 1948 to 1980, Hercules Inc., manufactured the agricultural pesticide toxaphene. Also disposed of in the landfill area were empty toxaphene product drums, process sludges, glass, rubble, and trash. In 1983, the State required Hercules to install a ground water monitoring system to assess site contamination. In 1984, because toxaphene was found in a deep/shallow well cluster in the aquifer beneath the site, additional ground water monitoring wells were installed. Hercules closed, covered, and seeded all landfill cells in accordance with State solid waste permits. The selected remedial action for this interim remedy includes extending municipal water lines and connecting all residences with private wells and the church to the municipal water supply; and implementing institutional controls, including ground water use restrictions.
