Abstract Carbon cycling in soils is an important process that involves the movement of large amounts of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) within the soil profile. Recent work in a variety of soils has indicated that DOC sorption properties of mineral horizons play an important role in the retention of DOC. As part of the Watershed Manipulation Project at Bear Brook Watershed in Maine (BBWM), the solubilization and movement of carbon in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems were evaluated. For the study, the objectives were to: (1) determine the sorption properties of mineral horizons present on the BBWM watersheds for SO4 and DOC; (2) evaluate the effect of solution pH and temperature on soil DOC sprotion; and (3) examine competitive sorption effects between DOC and SO4.
