Abstract The Army Creek Landfill (ACL), formerly known as the Llangollen Landfill, is located approximately two miles southwest of New Castle, Delaware, and is adjacent to the Delaware Sand and Gravel Landfill Superfund site. The County operated this 44-acre landfill, which accepted municipal wastes, from 1960 until its closure in 1968 when it was filled to capacity. In late 1971, water in a residential well downgradient of the site developed quality problems. Results from a subsequent investigation showed that leachate, most likely originating from the Army Creek and Delaware Sand and Gravel Landfills, was contaminating local aquifers. This lead to the installation of a ground water recovery system designed to maintain a ground water divide between the landfills and the Artesian Water Company Wellfield located downgradient of the landfills. The primary contaminants of concern include: VOCs, inorganics, heavy metals, benzene, and chromium.
