Abstract A study was conducted to determine the ground-water pollution problems in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Information was obtained through review of the literature and through interviews with engineers, scientists, and governmental officials concerned with water pollution in the five states of the project area. Natural salinity was the greatest factor affecting the quality of gound water of the region. Disposal of oil-field brines was the most widespread source of man-made pollution. Other causes of ground-water pollution included poor well construction and abandonment procedures, over-pumping, irrigation return flows and land disposal of solid and liquid wastes.
