Abstract The report gives results of a phosphate fertilizer industry study to evaluate multimedia control technology, identify information gaps, and define needed RDandD projects. The following manufacturing processes were covered: wet process phosphoric acid, superphosphoric acid, diammonium phosphate, and normal and triple superphosphate. Air emission control technology, based largely on using wet scrubbers, is adequate for control of fluoride and particulate and is used throughout the industry. The cross-flow packed scrubber appears to be the best and applies to all processes. The gypsum pond appears to be the major environmental concern: main problems are fluoride emissions to the atmosphere and possible leaching of fluoride, phosphate, and radioactive substances. None of the several control alternatives are economically attractive. RDandD projects identified and defined in this study are: (1) an epidemiologic study of the industry; (2) studies of gypsum pond emissions and chemistry; (3) an evaluation and optimization of wet scrubbers; (4) a study of the atmospheric interaction and dispersion modeling of ammonia/sulfuric acid mist; (5) a demonstration of a dry system for fluoride removal; and (6) an evaluation of the Kimre mist eliminator.
