Abstract Protective clothing (for example, gloves, aprons, masks, and protective ensembles) is often constructed in the form of barrier polymeric membranes. Permeation testing, which is used frequently to screen candidate polymers for use as protective barrier is expensive and time consuming--particularly when working with compounds as toxic and as subject to regulation as CW agents. The authors have recently reviewed the literature and developed an initial approach to the prediction of the diffusivities and solubilities of organic solvents in polymers. A brief review of the applicable theory will be presented. Predicted diffusivities and solubilities for several solvent/polymer combinations will be compared to experimental data.
