Abstract |
The solid waste handling system of Johnson City, Tennessee, is found to be clean but over-equipped and sometimes uneconomical. Findings of this study suggest that: (1) collection routes be more carefully controlled; (2) a new system of handling bulk containers be inaugurated; (3) direct haul to the disposal site replace a portion of the transfer operations; and (4) twice-weekly collection replace container spraying for fly control. Changes are suggested in the ordinances covering solid waste handling, including further regulation of hospital waste handling and landfill operations. The detailed analysis of the nature of the solid wastes was made primarily to aid research at the U. S. Public Health Service Tennessee Valley Authority Composting Plant. Statistical data are included. |
